Most of the songs (as opposed to the background score, which is pretty good IIRC) are insipid, bland, and unfunny, but the movie's music redeems itself entirely with "Hellfire", which is IMO the best villain song in the entirety of the Disney canon. Better than "Be Prepared". Better than "Poor Unfortunate Souls".
The Disney version suffers from a real inability to decide what it wants to be: a fairly dark exploration of Frollo's descent into monstrosity, or a generic Disney movie with the obligatory Unlikely Hero, Hot Love Interest, and Quirky Supernatural Companions, as opposed by a For The Evulz villain. The real tragedy of the film is that whoever was responsible for "Hellfire" didn't have more creative control.

Anyway, this review has done the impossible and made me want to read French literature, which I haven't touched since my father forced me to read Les Misérables when I was ten.
