Perhaps it is a bit of a stretch to say it was "true to the time". The late 1970s were not as rigid as the world in "Mote in God's Eye". But it wasn't nearly as far off as it would be if it was written now.
Yes, I agree that birth control and sex outside of marriage was pretty commonplace (although I would say that it was still possible to raise eyebrows by living with someone - they just didn't raise very high). Plus it was pre-Herpes and pre-HIV, so there was a certain attitude that sex wasn't going to be bad for you. Although, cocaine was also considered a "safe" drug in the Disco Seventies...
I wouldn't say that anyone said I shouldn't go to college, just that there was an assumption that most women wouldn't stay in the work force for a lifetime because they would be busy raising families.
