I never claimed to accept the idealized versions of either the Southern antebellum concept of chivalry or the Fifties of the "nuclear family." Of the two, however, I find the Southern concept the more obnoxious because it was limited solely to at least middle-class whites; the Fifties concept was much more inclusive. The 1950's suburbs were also far more tolerant of dissent than was the 1850's South. Not everyone realizes this because non-historians don't realize how intolerant was the South between the 1820's and 1860's; nor is it generally realized that the worst intolerance during the "Fifties" actually took place in the late 1940's.
