Yes, that's pretty much my take. He knows he (and the Mormon church) are wrong, but he can't make that final leap to free himself from cognitive dissonance.

Anyway, you aren't missing much. I admit I find his books entertaining, but he's a mediocre writer with lightweight ideas.
