" People throw out so much crap that doesn't need to be thrown out. "
But if it was in a thrift store, they didn't throw it out... They gave it to the thrift store.
I give lost of stuff to the thrift store - shoes I can't wear anymore, jeans that don't fit, dresses that are too young for me. And furniture that we are replacing. That way, someone else can get some good out of it. The other options are send it to the landfill (then it really would be thrown out) or try and sell it.
I tell you, ever try and sell old furniture? We had a dinette set we were getting rid of (and not replacing with anything, we just didn't want it taking up room anymore) and I could not find a buyer of any kind (except the scam artists prowling craigslist). It finally went to the thrift store, and they were amazed that I was getting rid of it. Sure, I could have invested some more time in trying to sell it, but after a month, forget it, I have other things to do.
