I do find that short pieces (whether short stories or even the whole 'flash fiction' thing) are really great for messing around with various stylistic things, much moreso than longer works like novels. Not least because if you try something tricky, you don't have the 'i will have to continue writing like this for 20 chapters' thing hanging over your head. If it works it works, if not you find out pretty quick, and yeah. Short stuff is where I discovered my love for using the second person, for example, though I still find it difficult to imagine pulling of off full length novel with something like that. so yeah, good medium for experimenting more methinks.
