Honestly, I have always appreciated what I thought of as AQ's style. While it may not fit the exact specifications of a writing manual, I thought you have own stylistic emphasis on traditional transparent prose (adding to its existing virtues of clarity thought and description and delivery of plot). The energy and sense of humour, use of turns of phrase, a quite expansive vocabulary, aren't just pretty baubles, they are integral to the story. Traditional prose is a versatile vehicle for such architectural elements. I'm not saying that writing can't be more precisely stylized, just that I wouldn't worry that AQ is 'too plain.'
Whatever you do, good luck!
