The way I see it, I would agree with you that it is possible to enjoy things while simultaneously recognising the deep flaws, and the embeddedness of them in our culture. While (from your quotes) it seems like Hornbeck might be going a bit too far, I believe she has a point, albeit expressed in a rather roundabout manner. Conan does not exist in a vacuum; it is symptomatic of the deep racism and sexism that still exists in our society. While a lot of that has been ameliorated in the recent past, power structures based on gender and race are ingrained unintentionally into nearly everything we do. I would encourage you not to make the assumptions that "white people wanting to kill other races" and "women-hating men" are the only manifestations of racism and sexism in our society. They're just the most visible, and often mask the much more casual and structural prejudices ingrained within our culture - one facet of which Hornbeck states as "willing to complacently enable violence and hate".
