I agree w/your take on US/Brit intelligent services as portrayed in books.
Did you read Len Deighton? I consider his books about "Harry Palmer the spy" ones of the best in the spy novel genre. And his language is better than Fleming's and Le Carre's, IMO.
There are also movies w/Michael Caine playing HP, of those I saw 1.5. I liked them, but that does not mean much :).
Also, there's Maugham's Ashenden, but I mention him just in passing :).
