If you liked this

Then all I can say is, get yourself on Gutenberg and check out The Worst Journey in the World, by Apsley Cherry-Garrard.

A young, keen, but otherwise utterly inexperienced man talks himself onto Scott's 1910 expedition to the Antarctic. The book is mainly about the "Worst Journey" - his trip with two others to walk across Antarctica in the middle of winter to collect penguin eggs (Yes, really). Returning a shattered wreck, he and the others wait with increasing anxiety as they realise Scott isn't coming back, culminating in their expedition the following spring to find the bodies.

A quite extraordinary story, supplemented by maps, drawings, water-colours, and photos.
