The impulse to engage rarely listens to the rational understanding that engagement will yield no benefit. But I give you credit for setting your bar for response quite higher than mine. Hell: I usually find it very, very hard not to respond if someone just disagrees with me without at least a halfway decent reason.
You may be right that he's not a sociopath. But I wouldn't rule it out.
