Okay, I graduated in 1980 as well, but we must have come from very different parts of the planet, because by that time the idea of women on birth control and sex outside of marriage was quite commonplace. No one ever told me I didn't need to go to college because I was destined to marry and have kids.
And as a matter of fact, that was the way it was in the 70s too when this novel was written. That's why when I saw that this book was published in 1974 I was astounded. From the description I thought it had been written some time in the 1940s at the latest. (I've never read the book. I think I've picked up some Niven stuff, but put it back down because cardboard characters don't appeal to me.)
