The book explains that the limited professional opportunities for women was due to some sort of civil war so that women became scarce and coddled. Human society was suppose to be new-Victorian or something like that. Just throwing it out there that I don't think Niven and Pournelle thought that women and the sciences were mutually exclusive inherently.
This remains one of my favorite old school science fiction books. Moties were so complex and truly non human without analogs unlike the aliens in Star Trek. Ilove how the dilemma had no villains.
