Don't beat yourself up. When you are a successful Author, you can hire minions to do that for you.
I favour Seats of the Pants: OotP - JkR whinged that Characters took over and carried the Plot. OotP is my favourite HP bk.
When I wrote Xena fan-fic, my favourites of my OWN fan-fix were where the Characters took my Premise and ran with it. Otherwise, it felt like doing it by the numbers.
As you know, I have my own selfish agenda for encouraging you to complete your original novel. Once its done, you can work on HhD 2 and this time it's Personal.
