I didn't like American Gods. I just didn't feel any connection to the main character and didn't care about what happened to him. I almost didn't buy Anansi Boys because I thought it might be more of the same. But I did and I found it much more enjoyable.
Gaiman is hit or miss for me. And as mongoose_bite says, sometimes it feels like he's an actor playing out the role of the famous author.
