not sure that i would agree with that last point. if this was a stand alone story, then yes. but it is a series, and in this book she is, as you say, twelve. it seems rather realistic to me that a twelve year old might not save themselves, particularly when faced with such an extreme situation for the first time. given how much more proactive she gets in later books, it makes for a nice story arc.
but then again, i am a contrary person by nature, and the idea of writing something a certain way because 'genre readers expect it' sets off all kind of NO bells in my head :]
