It's interesting that you mention the Gaiman connection. My relationship to Gaiman is thus: I love the different elements he uses in his stories (ie, all the dark and quirky stuff), but his plots and endings usually leave me feeling "meh."
I had a similar reaction to The Good Thief when I read it two years ago. I liked all the bizarre and dark elements of the story, but the story as a whole was kind of forgettable.
