You know at what point in this review I knew that I never want to read this book? This lovely sentence:
She graduated at the top of her college class and possesses all the skills of the finest minds in British intelligence, but her gender qualifies her only to be the newest typist at No. 10 Downing Street.
As other commenters above me have said, this pretty much fails basic research into women's work in wartime. Women had more job opportunities in wartime, not less because most of the men were off fighting a goddamn war. The rest of your review just confirmed it.
(Code Name Verity is so much better in every way possible. If you want to read a good book featuring women in WW2, read this one. Don't let the fact that it's YA deter you. There are zero subplots involving girls angsting over hot boys. It's the relationship between the two primary female characters that really defines the book.)
