This book was assigned by a book club I belong to. I made it as far as page 265 and just closed the book and proclaimed, "I'm done. I've had enough."
I totally agree with your review. I found some of the actions to be ridiculous and geared toward young adults. I wonder if anyone in the UK has read this and had any comments on it.
I also agree about your comments about lousy writers. There are many best sellers that I have thrown against the wall. It amazes me how many people think these books are good quality.
As for the other authors you mentioned, I wouldn't bother with Jacqueline Winspear, either. I'm one of the few who disliked her first Maisie Dobbs novel and never read any of the other ones. It also has an unbelievable plot and inconsistencies in her female character. There's too much going on with not enough organization in the flow.
If you want to read a decent story in this type of cozy genre, then I recommend "Crocodile on the Sandbank" by Elizabeth Peters. I think that story has much better flow than Maisie Dobbs and Mr. Churchill's Secretary. I haven't read the subsequent books, but "Crocodile on the Sandbank" is her first novel and she does a pretty good job.
Awesome review
