If 'soulmate romance in space! (with a dash of other stuff)' sounds good to you, this series might be worth a second glance, but if not, your review said it all, I think.
The main series is one of my guilty pleasure reads, but it's far less space opera and far more romance-in-space-with-adventures-in-alien-customs-and-culture*, with extra elements varying per book. (There is a central story line that's being developed, especially in later books, but if you haven't come for the romance, I doubt you'd want to stick around for the plot.)
I read the prequel saga maybe two times, but given the legendary status of these characters in the main series, 'meeting' the real thing just didn't quite live up to my (probably too high) expectations? (Well, except for Jela's tree, maybe.)
* Well, okay. Local Custom basically reads like Jane Austen on an alien planet. Then, Scout's Progress is like Cinderella on an alien planet, if Cinderella had been a brilliant maths professor. I love this series, but if you go in for space opera, these books aren't going to fit the bill.
