I started reading this series by buying the first five books for reading over a couple of long flights. I didn't really "get it" either after the first couple. If I hadn't already bought the books and been stuck on an airplane, I probably wouldn't have gotten past book one or two. But they do get massively better as the series wears on. It took until the Carpenter family shows up, the third book, to really start drawing me in. It got better from there and now I'm a big fan. It's worth giving this at least one more book to see if you start getting interested.
