Sounds like there are some interesting ideas buried under all that action! Alas. I also found Sanderson seems to enjoy 'gaming' his own worlds, picking apart the technical intricacies of his story and logical power-ups for his character. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't--but both of these gentleman seem to forget what made gaming fun, not the rules, the sense of self-aware humor and adventure. Without that, it's just self-absorbed!
I always pick up, start, and discard far more fantasy books than I ever finish. It's probably my favorite subgenre, but I've found it harder and harder to find any worth reading between problematic older material and newer material with trends that I don't enjoy.
Any recommendations by chance for a good epic fantasy?
