Many years ago, a relative of mine was selected to lead a demonstration Great Books discussion group on the local public television station. The selected book was The Brothers Karamazov, so he borrowed a copy from his sister. When he arrived at the studio, he found that due to time constraints, the discussion was to be limited to Ivan and the Grand Inquisitor. To his dismay, he also found that the Grand Inquisitor was so irrelevant to the plot that the Book-of-the-Month Club simply left that chapter out and thus he had not read it. His co-stars prepped him with a few leading questions which he duly repeated on the air to "facilitate" the discussion, those who had read the chapter discussed and the show went on.
