I always thought Nigel was not just another snake. Sometimes, it even felt like he could understand Alex. He might not be special, but he is no ordinary snake either. I think we will learn more about him in future books,

I grew fond of him and his slithering....I was kinda hoping he'd be around more, but it's very fitting that the person who summoned him would be the one he would help kill...very fitting indeed. I feel a bit leery of knowing that Auntie Diana is a black owl. Kinda creepy the way she off'd JM.....woulda been funnier if Malcom were around and "accidentally" had owl for dinner...hahahhahahahahaha

Does this refer to gifting Nemesis mayhaps? I expect that will cost her an endless amount of woe at some point. But it may just as well have ment her closing the veil with Deaths pidge - that was cheating after all and has most likely 'doubled her problems' even if The Deathly Power hasn't seen fit to inform her yet. Could mean both.

A cat, an owl, and a (¿snake) ? You know, suddenly it seems as if Diana might have caused that car crash. Whether it was intentional or not though... She could have just been careless while chasing after Alex broom, I suppose. Yet I can't help noticing how it seemed she wanted Alex to find out about Claudia.

As for there being someone else that set John Manuelito up, we'd guessed at that earlier. I still believe it was a member of the original Thorn Circle. About the prophecy, its nice to finally realize what it may be about. I like it so far, and I do think you'll do its wording justice once you do reveal it.

Now I do hope the death you were refering to previous to the release of AQATSA was in fact John and that Larry did make it, as well as the other students. Here's to hoping no one died from the crows or chindi. Although the latter seems likely to me, bye bye Dylan or that little girl with the dreads or Torvald. I am very relieved though that Abraham Thorn is not dead.

Now to the real issue; What is to happen with Alex ? It wouldn't surprise me in the least if she were expelled. In fact I'd be impressed with Lilith and Diana if she were not. Regardless of who was at fault, her presence at Charmbridge undeniably puts the other students at risk. Maybe she will be accepted into that school in New Orleans. Would be neat to see some Vodoo magic. Well, even if she does end up in day school, it's not like that would stop her from doing what she does.

Great chapter! My initial thoughts:

1) John Manuelito apparently not knowing about Mary Dearborn's assassination attempts + Diana Grimm's animagus form being a black owl = nothing good. Not quite sure where this is going, but now I am wondering who exactly caused the car accident that injured Bonnie.

2) No way does Alexandra avoid being expelled. Not only was she already on probation and given her last warning, but her actions have indirectly caused severe injury to Larry, and put other students in danger via jibay. I know that wasn't directly her fault, but Manuelito would have never made it past the wards and into the under-cellars if Alex hadn't opened the way.

I think the 'does Alexandra get expelled' comes down to 'does Larry have integrity and a backbone'.

Basically, if he says, "Alexandra told me not to go their and I did anyway and then she saved my life," she should be okay, assuming the teachers are fair.

If he says otherwise of feels justified in keeping silent because he see's Alexandra as a menace, and gets away with it, not so much.

Point is Alexandra did not break the rules or endanger anyone until Larry acted like a dumb blonde in a bad horror movie and almost got ate. Then she acted heroically.

I believe in the obvious possibility - Mary lied. If you read that chapter carefully, Mary didn't mention John at all until Alexandra had asked her pointedly about him, her own fears based on a chance sighting in the Goblin Market. It seems John has been made a fall guy in more ways than one- he is a petty dark convention wannabe if there ever was one (it was nice the way you can sense his youth even through the sadistic dialogues in this chapter), and someone found his history with Alexandra and the MMS very, very useful.

Who was Mary protecting? For she must have had outside help for those tricks (unless she turns out to be Diana Grimm taking polyjuice potion or something).

Really not sure how you are going to wrap the tale up in just one more chapter, but looking forward to it all the same :)

I am not sure Mary lied, maybe she really believed it was John. She doesn't seem the type to do such manipulation. Also she really did have a chance to kill Alex, well if she could manage a killing curse anyway.

Whoever it was that Mary was working with must also have a good amount of knowledge about what happened with John, Alex and Darla. There are a few people besides those three that have this knowledge

So who knows John, Alex, Darla, and Mary, would want to kill Alex, didn't mind setting up John as the fall guy, and could convince Mary to believe things a certain way. The obvious answer to me is the (unnamed?) Dearborn sister. John mentioned that she was at school with him, but Darla and Alex never met her in the MM society, so she must have graduated by then. Interestingly enough, this dark-haired hanger-on to Abraham Thorn is about that age..
