Super images. I especially like the top one. It's very emotional and natural-looking. I like the poses, how they have their backs to each other.
There's just something that looks unfinished with the trousers of both characters in the bottom one. Although the floo powder flames/cloud looks fantastic, as well as the look on Claudia's face.

Damn you for sticking a stunning cliffhanger at the end of such an emotionally charged chapter!

Darla

I got an odd feeling at work today thinking about the last chapter. What if Alex already is living parallel lives with the aid of polyjuice? Darla may not be Darla but Darla/Alex.

PS: Cliffhangers on Monday-Friday chapter gaps = mean

This is a fascinating theory! After all, I tend to believe Alex when she says that it was Darla who stunned her in the basement. It also would explain Darla's strange behavior in LB, like why she wanted an obol and why she joined the MMS and tried to stop Alex and Max.
I'm curious to know your reasoning with this theory. At what point in time do you think that Alex would have begun to impersonate Darla? And what are your thoughts on when or if Darla/Alex was going to use the obol? And what is Darla/Alex trying to do now? Is Abraham Thorn helping her? And has Alex from the future learned that she can't change the past and that's why she has to go through with all the stupid things that Darla did? (After all, she salutes her past self at the Blacksburg station because it's what she remembers seeing 11 hrs ago).

Really? I was almost certain it was Alex herself who stunned her...self. My guess is she'll get her hands on a time-tuner again sometime later in the book. The Alexandra Quick stories all mirror the Harry Potter stories in one way or another, and this would be a very obvious way to reflect the PoA.

The Darla theory would be insane, though, in the awesome way. I'd have to re-read everything in books two and three just to find all the little hints and such. But it seems like the time-tuner plot device is being shelved for now, so I'm really looking forward to learning more about the Deathly Regiment.

I don't think it goes all the way back through AQ2, for example, I just can't believe Alex would try to kill herself in the dueling competition. I hadn't thought about it going back to Darla's quest for an obol. I'll have to think about that more and do some re-reading. My original thought was that it started over the summer and would be why the Dean let "Darla" back into school - so she could keep a better eye on the second Alex.

Darla's obol

At the time,I confused Lands Beyond where dead Humans go with Lands Below where Free Elves live.

So, I assumed that Darla wanted the obol so she could talk with a dead Loved one.

I assume that Darla was also confused.
Matbe Darla wanted to talk to a dead elf?

There is a lot that we don't know about Darla; we know that she had a sister to whom something very very bad happened, but we don't know what, when, or why. I assume that whatever is happening with Darla has to do with her sister - including her incredibly inept attempt to AK Alex in the Duelling Club. That looked very much as though she were being forced by someone else and trying to do something she could not do. And one big difference between AQ and Harry Potter is the importance of family lines and secrets. Remember what Valeria said about family secrets and patterns of behaviour that go back generations and that the families in question do not want examined. No doubt the Dearborns have as many secrets as the Thorns, if not more.
