When I first saw that picture (before reading the chapter), I thought it was Darla reaching into a bag to steal the bone flute, not Sonja and Charlie lying on the ground.

...

*ahem*

So if Darla's sister isn't actually dead, just what does she want in the Lands Beyond? Or maybe Angelique is wrong, and she is dead. Or...

Crap, I can't even speculate. I guess I'll just have to wait "patiently" for Chapter 28. Which, I'm predicting right now, will be entitled "The Deathly Regiment."

Antoher great chapter! The closer we get to the end the more unsure I am about any predictions... way to build the suspense.

I believe TealTerror is now setting odds on the Darla Deathwatch.

My speculations: Darla attempts to get into the Lands Beyond and something goes awry in the process. Possibly Abraham Thorne, alerted in some way by the attack on Charlie, arrives at the school and the Aurors get involved. Chances are high that Darla gets killed somehow.

Oh yeah, and something I forgot. Alex ran after Darla not because she's trying to prevent her from going in the Lands Beyond, but because she's going to try to give Darla the pigin. That would get Max back and get revenge for what happened to Charlie. (I'm going to be so excited if I'm right!)

See, here's the thing: the book is called Alexandra Quick and the Deathly Regiment. The Deathly Regiment is going to have to show up soon, and with so little time left (I believe it's only 4 more chapters at this point), I find it hard to believe that their role is going to be unrelated to the Darla plot.

Which leads me to believe that Darla is, for some reason, trying to summon or otherwise deal with the Deathly Regiment. Why she needs the bone flute for that I have no idea, but we don't have much information on the regiment to make a good guess anyway.

And yeah, my odds on the Darla Deathwatch are at 90% after this chapter. >_> On the other hand, my odds that Darla gets betrayed and killed by the Deathly Regiment in particular are 60%, so you can bet against that if you want and make some money if you're right. ^_^

>And yeah, my odds on the Darla Deathwatch are at >90% after this chapter.

Are we supposed to be making bets now?
I don't know how to pay or recieve Real money.
Let us assume that everybody starts with 100 internet dollars.

So, I bet i$5 that Darla will survive AQ3.
Ifn Darla survives: the scores will be Rhemus 145, TealTerror 55. Ifn Darla dies, the scores will be Rm 95, TT 105.

>See, here's the thing: the book is called >Alexandra Quick and the Deathly Regiment. The >Deathly Regiment is going to have to show up soon,

Bears are catholic, popes poo in the woods.
Grandpa Absalom fought AGAINST Deathly Regiment.
I bet i$5 that Darla lied. Max's ghost fights v DR.

>(I believe it's only 4 more chapters)
I bet 5 that AQ3 will end nearer to chp 36 than 31,

>Why she needs the bone flute
I bet i$5 on Occam's Razor, the virtue of a SMALL list of preliminary assumptions:
Darla was so desparate for her Obol.
Her beloved sister really is dead.
Darla lied to Angelique.

Hillary married a Human and uncle Senator organized the "honour" killing.
But Aurors are the Keystone Kopps.
Aurors failed, but Darla believes the official report that they succeeded.

AQ2, Darla was so desparate for her obol. She loves a dead person: a relative, a lover or a best friend. It's gotta be a relative.

Which leads me to believe that Darla is, for some reason, trying to summon or otherwise deal with the Deathly Regiment. Why she needs the bone flute for that I have no idea, but we don't have much information on the regiment to make a good guess anyway.

I went back to read some passages that preluded to this, especially the Mayan vision thingy in Lands Below. And this is the very first thing I read:

"Getting checked for curses wouldn't be a bad idea," Anna agreed. "Although if the coin really did have a Thief's Curse on it, it probably would have affected you already."

"Actually, it would have affected Charlie," Alexandra pointed out. That had worried her a great deal the previous night, and she'd stayed up late keeping an eye on her raven. Nothing had happened, though, and Charlie was still fine this morning, and still annoyed at having the coin taken away.

"Charlie's your familiar," said Constance.

"A curse drawn by a familiar goes to its witch," stated Forbearance.

That made Alexandra frown again. Anna started to disagree with them, which led to an argument about the nature of curses. Alexandra didn't much like the idea that Charlie could go and get her cursed, though she certainly didn't want Charlie cursed either.

Well, the curse visited on Charlie in this chapter was felt by Alexandra and is what alerted her to what Darla was doing. So it seems that the Pritchards were right and Anna was wrong. Someone has been working out his imaginative world very carefully indeed.
