Alexandra Quick and the Stars Above

Yes, I finished the first draft of Alexandra Quick and the Stars Above.

46 chapters and (EEEEEEEE!) 276,000 words. That's half the length of War and Peace.

(By comparison, AQATTC was 162,000 words, AQATLB was 227,000 words, and AQATDR was just under 200,000 words.)

Hopefully the word count will shrink a bit in editing. And believe me, this book needs a lot of editing. Once I've gone through the entire book and revised each chapter, and hopefully caught most of the plot holes and dropped threads and extraneous material, it will be ready for my betas to start working on it.

But -- first draft finished! Yay!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2

So anyway, I rewarded myself by finally going to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. I saw the 3D version, not because I particularly wanted to see it in 3D but because the next available non-3D version wasn't showing until later than I wanted to stay out.

The 3D was kind of cool in places, though I don't think it really added much. As for the movie itself, I admit I am a bit of a sucker for epic spectacle, so being that this was the biggest, most expensive film and the grand finale, I liked it a lot. It was fairly faithful to the book and didn't make any real teeth-gnashing alterations, though obviously a lot of the small details from the novel were omitted. And David Yates is totally a Harry/Hermione shipper.

I don't know which, if any, of Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson are likely to become future A-listers (or even B-listers), but they all turned in fair performances. Ironically, it was Alan Rickman who I think turned in the most disappointing performance, maybe because by now the poor guy is showing his age. In most of his scenes, he just kind of looked half asleep and delivered his characteristic drawl in slow motion.

I definitely think it's worth seeing in a theater, with or without 3D.
